Dental Exams & Cleanings

The dental exam is an integral part of your ongoing care. It allows us to follow your oral health over time, identify early changes, and tailor preventive and restorative care to your needs. Here’s what you can expect during these appointments:

  • Your medical and dental history are reviewed in detail. This is your opportunity to share any concerns and update us on changes to your overall health. While our focus is on your oral health, your systemic health is closely interconnected and may influence disease risk, healing, and how we tailor treatment recommendations.

  • Low-radiation digital radiographs are used to evaluate bone levels, detect decay between the teeth, and identify latent infections. This information supports a comprehensive, preventive approach to care. A complete set is obtained for new patients, with limited imaging for established patients as part of their routine care.

As many conditions are not detectable through visual examination alone, radiographs are an essential component of diagnosis. Accordingly, appropriate imaging is required to proceed with examination and treatment.

  • Oral cancer accounts for approximately 3% of all cancers diagnosed in the United States. Early detection remains the most effective tool for improving treatment outcomes. We perform a thorough evaluation of the head, neck, and oral soft tissues, looking for asymmetries, persistent ulcers, suspicious lesions, and other abnormalities. While certain risk factors—such as tobacco, alcohol use, and HPV—are well-established, routine screenings are essential for all adults.

  • We perform a detailed periodontal evaluation to assess the health of your supporting tissues. These findings help distinguish between gingivitis and periodontal disease. Gingivitis is characterized by inflammation of the gums without loss of supporting bone and is generally reversible with appropriate care. Periodontal disease, in contrast, involves irreversible loss of the supporting structures of the teeth, including alveolar bone, and may progress to tooth mobility and eventual tooth loss if left untreated. Early intervention allows for more conservative management, while delayed treatment often requires more complex therapy.

  • Each tooth is evaluated for decay, wear, existing restorations, and alignment within the bite. Our approach is not only to address current findings, but to anticipate potential concerns and prevent complications before they develop, reducing the need for more complex and invasive treatment over time.

  • Your cleaning is calibrated to the health of your gums and the presence of any tartar or plaque buildup. The goal is to remove mineralized deposits that accumulate between visits and reduce the bacterial load beneath the gumline. This allows the body’s natural defenses to maintain a balanced, healthy environment—critical in preventing disease progression and preserving the foundation of your teeth. After your cleaning, we’ll offer personalized recommendations to help you care for your teeth and gums at home.
